Get out of your Head! Discover these five key ways of grounding your energy

Written by: My Chakra Life - Jun 23rd, 2020

Anxiety pulls you into your head. It focuses all your attention on your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions, which usually leads to negatively forecasting the future. Grounding pulls you back into reality and the present.

“You are in the here and now, while your mind is in the future. This creates an anxiety gap.”

Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

Your body is always in the present.

We can use that to reconnect with the physical.

Grounding yourself in the present moment is a powerful way to close the ever-present ‘gap’ caused by anxiety.

I often spend time ‘in my head’

At its worst, anxiety would hi-jack my thoughts without notice, sending me into a future-tripping spiral.

Once, when I had set myself the seemingly simple task of working in a café for the morning… you know – to ‘get me out of the house’; the forecasting started with mind-blowing brutality…

On arrival… “Shit, it’s really busy, there’ll be nowhere to sit… what will I do then? It’s a stupid system, I have to buy my coffee before I find a table? What if there isn’t a table? I’m not leaving my bag on the seat – it’ll get nicked. Oh, God – what if I find a table and then need to go to the toilet?”

Having bought my fancy coffee… “Great there’s one table. It’s a four-seater… there’s only one of me. I don’t have any right to a four-seater. What about all the people who arrive after me? They’ll think I’m a dick.”

As lunchtime drew closer… “Oh my God, there’s a queue of people. They’re all staring at me, thinking how selfish I am sitting there alone… on my big, spacious four-seater table… alone… just drinking coffee. They probably want to eat. I’m costing the café-owner customers and money. The place will probably go bust. Because of me.”

At this point, it all got too much for me and I had to leave, in the midst of what had become a huge panic attack.

I probably should have left a lot sooner, when I realised things weren’t going to get any better – lesson learnt!

But, if I had started by grounding my energy in the space, I would at least have had a fighting chance at making that lovely-sounding idea: “I know! I’ll work from a coffee shop – it’ll be so great to get out of the house and be around people again!” a positive reality.

What is grounding?

Grounding means different things to different people, but at its core, it is the process of reconnecting with yourself, your body, the space you occupy, the earth beneath you, and the world around you.

The dictionary definition:

(Verb) to place on a foundation; fix firmly; settle or establish; found.

Everything, and everyone, needs a firm foundation on which to build – grounding your energy can create that foundation, giving your energy the stability it needs to move upwards to more spiritual and intellectual pursuits in a healthy way.

How do I know if my energy needs grounding?

If you have been doing a lot of spiritual or intellectual work, it is healthy and essential to ground yourself.

The Crown Chakra (top of the head) governs our spiritual connection to forces greater than ourselves, and our Root Chakra (base of the spine) represents our connection to the earth.

They are two sides of the same coin. Opposite and equal. Eager to be balanced.

Physical symptoms could include lightheadedness, dizziness, inability to concentrate, and confusion.

These symptoms can sometimes relate to an over-active Crown Chakra, so balancing that energy with a strong Root is vital. (NB if you have even the slightest inkling this could be something else – see your doctor immediately).

Waking up feeling like you’ve literally just gone to sleep? This can be a sign that you have a lot going on in your head – leaving your subconscious mind a lot to process during sleep. Grounding during the day can help with any frenzied thoughts/dreams at night.

And of course, there’s anxiety.

An overactive mind, lack of restful sleep, constantly thinking about the past or the future leaves us open and easy prey for the subconscious mind.

Grounding and bringing yourself back into the moment is one of the most powerful ways to deal with anxiety longer-term and in the moment.

So, how do I start grounding my energy?

So many things!!! Can you tell I’m excited? But today, we’re going to focus on my top five:

We all breathe. All the time, duh right?

But really focusing on your breath, sensing it, feeling it, listening to it, inhabiting it, is a powerful way to bring your attention to the now. Closing your eyes brings even more powerful intensity to the exercise.

Try to aim for 12 second breaths – five full cycles per minute. My favourite way to do this is 4/8 breathing – in for four; out for eight. Set your metronome app and really focus.

I use this with all my clients during sessions to help us connect to the space and to each other.

Walking barefoot

Now is the perfect time to make this a habit.

It’s nice and warm so it’s easy to walk barefoot around the house and outside – which is always the most fun!

But just walking is not quite enough…

Really focus on the sensations coming up through your feet.

As you move your foot through the action of walking, focus on the whole contact from heel to ball to toe.

Note the different textures as you move from surface to surface.

It’s joyful. Feel it. Love it. It’s so simple, but so powerful.

I am a lover of crystals. They are so beautiful even if you don’t believe anything else about them!
So, why not give it a try?

The best crystals for grounding and for strengthening your Root Chakra are lower vibrational ‘heavy’ frequency stones – usually black or red.

I meditate every day with grounding crystals around me. My Red Jasper thumb stone is usually close by wherever I am.

Some suggestions for grounding crystals (heads up – the following paragraphs contain affiliate links to Psychic Tree, my wonderful supplier of all things spiritual. I may receive a commission for purchases made through these links…):

Hematite, Black Obsidian, Garnet, Smoky Quartz, Red Jasper, Jet, Bloodstone, Ruby, Fire Opal, Tiger’s Eye, Fire Agate, Black Tourmaline, Onyx, Red Jasper, Spinel. You can get a whole range of healing crystals here.

Remember to cleanse, charge and programme your crystals before you use them – message me
if you would like some info on this process.

I also have a water bottle with a crystal chamber which holds Black Obsidian chips, so I can create a grounding tincture to drink throughout the day. Genius – I love it! Get your very own crystal water bottle here!

Grounding Crystals

As I mentioned, I meditate with grounding crystals, but you can also create a grounding visualisation before you start meditating or any time, any place you need a little grounding stability!

My favourites are to imagine strong roots anchoring you to the earth, then going down through the ground and down and down through the earth all the way to the centre of the earth. Use those roots to anchor you and suck up the wonderful energy from the centre of the earth into your feet. I also imagine my roots wrapping around black and red crystals as they journey through the earth – extra grounding points! I always imagine the earth red in colour – like clay.

A simpler visualisation if you’re pressed for time, or standing in the queue for the bus (!), is to imagine a ball of red light at the base of your spine. Imaging the light emanating outwards and downwards to encompass the whole of your lower body, then upwards to encompass your whole body. Saying the affirmations ‘I am safe’ or ‘I am connected the earth’ while seeing this amps up the power – say it in your head if you’re in the bus queue!

Red is the colour of the Root Chakra so seeing red anywhere (IRL or in your visualisation) is very grounding.

And finally, my favourite!!!

The simple act of eating something. Actually making your physical body heavier is a grounding activity. But you do need to do it mindfully.

Pause. Take a breath. Consume the food (I like a Wagon Wheel after a client session – you know, for grounding purposes).

Feel how it feels in your mouth, savour the taste and texture, and be aware of it as it goes down.

Certain foods are associated with the Root Chakra and grounding – all root vegetables and warming, heavy foods.

Not great for this time of year, but I do enjoy a skin-on potato salad at a BBQ!

So, there you have it, my guide to spiritual and energetic grounding and why it can be a powerful tool on your own personal pathway to anxiety-free living.
